What is Navel Candling?

What is navel candling?

One of the most common gastrointestinal complaints in clinical practice for both adults and children is chronic diarrhoea. It was reported that almost 1% to 5% of adults suffered from some form of stomach discomfort. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) had been used to treat this for thousands of years. Navel candling is an ancient healing method. Also known as stomach or tummy candling, this centuries-old practice is often also used to detoxify, cultivate and treat other ailments in the body.

Chinese medicine practitioners believe that the navel is connected to the meridians. Since the navel, with no fatty tissue, is the thinnest part of the abdominal wall, this region is more susceptible to external stimuli. The burning candle produces a vacuum and helps with the dispelling of toxins by the gentle heat produced.

The technique involves lighting a hollow herbal candle and then positioning it over the belly-button. Usually, they are made of wax-soaked fabric or a combination of substances, often paraffin and beeswax. Some of the navel candles are produced primarily from ginger herbs to help relax and cope with the detox process.

A gentle and soothing massage could be applied to the abdominal region during the candling process to aid in circulation. Massaging this area can help strengthen your digestive system and relieve symptoms such as nausea and lack of appetite.

 Why the navel?

Our abdomen houses our abdominopelvic cavity and is a very essential part of our body. As such, digestion and reproductive processes are closely related and determined by the health of the abdomen.

According to TCM, the stomach is most affected by chronic worry, anxiety or overthinking. It not only digests everything we consume but also the emotions we internalize. Your navel is situated over your digestive tract as well as major lymph nodes and blood vessels. Crucially, it’s also connected to your vagus nerve – one of the largest nerves in your body, running from your gut to your brain – meaning it plays a major responsibility in the rest and digest functions of your body.

By communicating directly with the gut via your belly button, you release energetic tension and blockages. The perfect example of how your physical and mental health can be brought back into harmony by targeting a central point is the rebalancing therapy of navel candling.

Sounds interesting! What are the benefits?

Navel candling can treat a variety of diseases in internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology, and paediatrics. Among them, navel therapy has the most significant effect on digestive diseases

liver function

  • Regulates the liver's functionality. It's a big organ with many big jobs. Even though we often only look at the liver as it relates to the digestive process, it should not be overlooked that the liver carries out many metabolic and regulatory functions.
